The Puppets of 2017

2017 has been an especially busy puppet-making year! We've built (at last count) 167 characters for performers, theatre, television, and film in 18 US States and 10 Countries around the world!
Orders for 2018 are already rolling in, here's to another year of creating!

Puppets! Puppets! Puppets!

The last 30 days have been a creative blur! I do recall a few nervous breakdowns, but that's all hearsay at this point.

Every year, around the Holidays, I get a spike in orders for custom builds. I'm always surprised and never prepared... you'd think I'd learn.

Here's a little of what I've been up to lately:

These four were an INSANE rush order, I haven't touched my Avenue Q puppets since Springer Opera House's production closed in May, but when I was contacted to recreate this group for an Israeli production of the show who's original puppet builder ran off with their deposit Audrey and I turned these guys around in just over a long, long week.

Nothing like a monster for Christmas!
I shipped out this big green lug (based on one of my Monster Mash designs) to a very special little girl in Australia

Lots of International shipping this year, like this unlikely duo, who also shipped below the equator, to a pair of very enthusiastic Goosebumps fans in New Zealand

This one was interesting. I built this guy for a client based on a store-bought puppet.
I have a love/hate relationship with the puppets created by this brand (who shall remain nameless, but you know who they are...) I made quite a few tweaks here and there while TRYING to stay faithful to the original's design, flaws and all!
And he's already at home in the U.K.!

And, finally, this one... this HUGE order has been on the table for quite a while.
I made extensive drawings and revisions at the request of the client, and built these guys to the specs of those original pieces of artwork.

I've finally wrapped up this order, so I'm officially off for Christmas!
Only a few more builds to go before the end of the year!

I hope 2018 is this productive, I also hope I can get a nap.

More soon!

Santa on eBay!

The big guy himself, just added to my eBay store!

More soon,

Mele Kalikimaka

Ever see Santa play a ukulele?

Last year my gal and I created to new characters, Frankie and Darla, for a 50s-Themed Christmas music video of Baby, It's Cold Outside. It was so much fun, and a fun way to end a CRAZY creative year, we decided it would be one of our Holiday traditions continuing again this year with Mele Kalikimaka!

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a goodnight!

PROJECT: BB-8 Repaint

Unless you've been living under a rock for the last year and a half, you know that Star Wars: The Last Jedi is almost upon us.
So there's no better time to work on a Star Wars project!

If you've known me for any amount of time you know how much I love toys.
And I've known myself long enough to know that it can be dangerous to start collecting anything TOO specific... as a recovering completionist (curse you, Funko Pops!) I have to be very choosy about what I add to my shelves.

There's nothing Star Wars does better than toys, but I'd managed to avoid them all, most specifically The Black Series line of figures and Jakks Pacific's line of over-sized action figures.
I was proud of myself, I'd done it! I'd beaten the collector inside of me!
Until I stumbled on BB-8.

I saw him (her?) from a distance. Across the crowded Dealers Floor at Dragon Con.
I thought I'd never see him (her?) again, but then he (she?) showed up in Target stores.

I fought the urge for a week or so, but the force was strong with this one...

It was probably the size of the figure that pulled me in, he (she?) looks and feels like an expensive piece, under-sized to be a replica, yes, but still really cool.
So I caved, as I always do, and threw him (her?) in the shopping cart.

BB-8 took his place on the shelf for well over a year, overlooking the living room and the other collectibles, and he's still the thing people talk about most when they come over.

BUT he still looked like a toy; a little too bright, not enough hard edges, and definitely WAY too squeaky clean.
He became one of my "I'll get to that one day.." projects, and stayed on his shelf gathering dust.

BUT The Last Jedi has taken over the internet and I can't go anywhere without seeing BB-8, so it was time to rough this cute little guy up...

I borrowed (stole) some painting and aging know-how from a few of my hyper-creative YouTube inspirations, mainly Cosplay Chris and Adam Savage's TESTED, which is essentially coating the entire figure in paint then removing most of it, leaving behind stains and seemingly random areas of wear and tear.

And a little work went a LONG way, the difference is astounding.
It's amazing what a little paint can do!

All in all, it was a pretty simple re-paint. Took me just under an hour and only cost me a few bottles of black and brown acrylic paints, a handful of paint brushes, and two rolls of paper towels.

Still busy over here, but winding down for the Holidays, I'll be back soon!

May the Force be with you,
Avery

A Tale of No Grinches

Do you remember that special Christmas show I posted about last week?
The one with the Grinch, fireworks, dancers, and a show we'd been rehearing for 3 weeks?

Yeah, about that...

Even Elsa couldn't control the weather, and heavy rain cancelled our precious show before it even had a chance to begin.
That's Winter in the South for ya...
The outdoor stage was too wet and dangerous for our dancers, and the steadily-increasing rain called off the Grinch's portions of the show shorty thereafter.

Everyone was already in costume and people were still arriving, so it would have been a real shame to just pack up and head back home.
A few disappointed, and wet, people were gathering to see Santa for consolation prize photos so Audrey, being the real-life Princess she is, decided to follow suit and pose for photos and meet kids as well.
Before you knew it the entire cast got in on the fun, and we all posed for TONS of pictures for the next hour or so.
It felt a bit like we were working at Disney World.

The skies cleared a bit, and the fireworks were still on, so we put on an impromptu, and very brief version of our show for the folks who were hanging out for the fireworks show.
We sang some carols, played some improv games, and had some fun with the crowd.
It felt like a community party.
It felt like Christmas.

It turned out to be ridiculously fun and I'd love to do it again next year!
Granted, I'd love to do a proper show even more... but you get the idea...

More later,
Avery

OOOM Podcast Extras!

A Tale of Two Grinches

This very special Christmas show is one of the many things that has had me swamped for the last month or so.
Sorry about that.

Every year, to kick off the Christmas season, the city of Phenix City (that's a strange sentence if you look at it too long...) puts on a variety show of sorts for the community at the Phenix City Amphitheater, a quaint little venue on the Chattahoochee River that only holds about 1000 people.

It's a pretty big deal, even Santa shows up!

I was lucky enough to be a part of  last year's show "Christmas Chaos on the Chattahoochee", as both a co-writer of the script and a performer with my buddy Sam Beman, who's been appearing as the Grinch locally for more than 10 years!

And we're back at it again this year, with an all-new show, "A Tale of Two Grinches".
I'm pumped to work with some of the wonderful cast from last year! Kristin Barker is reprising her role as Mrs. Claus, and Donterrius Ruff, who I've worked with for years on Sam's TV series "Light Talk", is joining me as Bubba the Elf (who, if you ask me, is probably up to something...)

Sam will also be wearing a brand-new Grinch costume made by Audrey (ya know, my awesome girlfriend?)
I also helped a little.

I'll be reprising two roles I originated in last year's show Skippy, the Grinch's right-hand man (well, Elf), and Max the Dog, who can talk now... don't ask.
I'll also be belting out "Let it Go" as Olaf (alongside my favorite gal as Elsa, and in a custom-made gown, no less)!
But my favorite addition to this year's show is Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reinder himself, a puppet I built just for this production who has quickly become one of my favorite new characters.

We've been in rehearsals for a few weeks now and we've laughed ourselves silly, let's just hope the audience finds us as funny as we do...

If you're a local come kick off Christmas with us with "Night of Lights" THIS THURSDAY NIGHT (Nov. 30th, 2017) at the Phenix City Amphitheater @ 7:00 PM EST.
Lots of fun in store with Elite Dance Academy, FREE Hot Chocolate, Fireworks, Comedy, and Santa Claus!
Plus, it's FREE!

More soon (...I Hope),

Checker Shoe Band is Back!

It's been quite a while since we've checked in with our friends from Heath and the Checker Shoe Band, but they're finally FINALLY back with a new episode!

When Stanley Stevens brings his new goldfish, Free Willy, to the show and quickly learns that caring for a pet is more than he'd bargained for.

Not much has changed since we left them in May of 2016, though I did repair, re-dress, and all-around re-furb the entire cast of characters so everything is shiny and new again!

I have missed living in the CSB world, things are so much simpler there.

PROJECT: Wicked Halloween Props

A few posts back I said I'd share some details on the props I created for our "WickedHalloween costumes and Photo-Shoot, and I know TENS of people are just dying to read all about it!
So here we go... before I forget...

Something that I have learned to love in Cosplaying with Audrey are the wonderful little details and pieces we create out of necessity. Convenience and comfort have been key to our Cosplays, especially when making something for a Con. So if we need a bag or a purse for example, finding a way to theme it to the character's personality is a lot of fun.

Audrey and I have deemed these details "Character Embellishments", i.e.; things that aren't necessarily "canon", but add to the costume's story and the world it lives in.

Like Audrey's Shiz University varsity sweater; nothing like it exists on-stage in the show, but it could very easily exist in their reality.

And she's darn cute in it...

In Wicked, Boq carries a small suitcase with him as he arrives at Shiz. Knowing we were taking our photos on a college campus, I wanted to play into the school scenes as much as I could, so, I went after the one prop I was pretty sure I could track down...

I was hoping to find a worn and torn vintage leather suitcase to modify, but couldn't find many affordable options. BUT I did find a vinyl cassette storage box (which is almost as old, am I right, Millennials?) that was the perfect size.

I started off like I do on every project, with a quick coat of spray paint to even everything out.
I had some light brown left over from my Hunny Pots project and that was all I needed to cover up some crayon scribbles and the sticky remains of what was left behind by a few Hello Kitty stickers...

I picked up a small leather belt with some hardware to make a strap to make it feel like it was part of a larger set of baggage.
I stopped just shy of designing a luggage tag, but I ran out of time...
A few more passes with some black, grey, and dark brown paints for texture to give an "aged" look to the box, and I was beyond happy!
I could have stopped right there...

But, of course, I wasn't ready to be done, so I designed a handful of Oz-Themed labels and souvenir stickers to add some more of that Character Embellishment that I mentioned earlier.
A fun $9 project that only took a few hours to pull off, AND I still got to bed before 2am!

I also threw together a Shiz textbook prop for the shoot. I went to a few thrift stores (yes, again) looking for a vintage book to work with, but I didn't have much luck (yes, again). So I grabbed a $5 sketchbook from Wal-Mart's art department.
I needed a new one, anyway...
A quick decal on the cover and an "IF FOUND" label on the back, with Boq's name and contact info (again, I love details, sue me...) made for a pretty simple, and nifty, prop.
I hit it with a few different colors of spray-paint as well, and took some sandpaper to the corners and aged it up a bit, like a generations-old textbook might be.
Easy. Simple. Awesome.

I had a blast and I love how the photos came out, but I've already said that...
That's all for now, I'll probably stop talking about Halloween soon.
Maybe.

More on the way,
Avery

OOOM Podcast Episode #3!

This week's episode of the Out of Our Minds Podcast is a Fan Theory Extravaganza!
We talk about it all! Star Wars, The Walking Dead, and Pixar (well, kinda)...

More soon,
Avery

THIS IS HALLOWEEN

One of the perks of being an "adult" is getting to act like a kid every now and then.
...Of course, I do get to play with dolls for a living, but I digress...

Growing up, my parent's rules for Halloween were pretty strict.
No costumes and no Trick-or-Treating.
So it wasn't until a few years back, when I moved out and into my own place, that I got to have a proper Halloween!
I bought a HUGE plastic pumpkin full of candy, Styrofoam tombstones, and spooky lights for the front porch, and was prepared for a night of scary movies and Trick-or-Treaters...

Yeah, no one came to the door and I ended the night eating my feelings in the form of about 50 Dum-Dum lollipops...

Fast forward to last year's Halloween (2016), now my girlfriend is a costumer so OF COURSE we're going all out on the costumes!
We dressed as Seymour and Audrey (and her name IS Audrey) from Little Shop of Horrors.
Little Shop
is a very important show to us and how we ended up together, but I won't go into all of that right now...
Because she's amazing, Audrey pulled the costumes together very quickly. But I wanted to contribute to the fun somehow, too, so built a prop "Audrey II" to carry around for the day.
What can I say, puppets are my crutch...

This year we knew that we'd have to step it up!
There was a very long list, but through a strenuous process of elimination we finally made the very tough and time-consuming decision...

Boq and G(a)linda from the Broadway Musical "Wicked".
It's an odd choice, and no one knew who we were, and that was part of the fun!

Both of our costumes came from Goodwill, with Audrey taking her magic touch to them a few weeks before Halloween. It only took her a few hours to tailor my suit and add all the "Ozian" details.
She's just magical like that.

I custom-built and customized a few props to complete our characters, I'll do a post on those later...

In all, we spent less than $50 for both costumes.
Boo-Yah!

It's become a tradition (and when I say "tradition" I mean that we've done it twice, so I should really come up with a better word before I post this thing...) to have a mini Photo-Shoot in costume with our "adopted" Theatre Daughter, Sophie McDow
We took 130+ pictures on the campus at Lagrange College (and got plenty of strange looks along the way) but the photos came out beautifully so I'm not complaining!

We spent the rest of the night on Audrey's front porch giving out candy and looking at everyone else's amazing costumes. Then we hit Wal-Mart at 2 am to stock up on 50% off props, costumes, and Puppet Making supplies!

It's crazy how much fun I didn't even know I could have!
I can't wait for next year, we are already working on it...

Avery

The Last 7 Days

I never should have complained about a few slow weeks last month, because now I am up to my eyes in work...

Puppets, writing, creating, and all-around craziness has CONSUMED my world in the last seven days...

I built these guys for my buddy Casey Ross, who I worked with earlier this year when he played Princeton/Rod in Springer Opera House's production of Avenue Q.

What he'll do with them is yet to be seen, but I will definitely share it here when it drops!

This Ghoulish Trio of characters were built, based on my Monster Mash designs, for a gentleman in Australia who missed out on the online eBay auctions for the original characters.
Pretty cool stuff!

I shouldn't complain, I love what I do and I'm very blessed to live the life I do.
Twenty or so other projects will rear their ugly heads soon...

More soon, because I NEVER SLEEP!

PROJECT: Star-Lord Blasters

WARNING: Nerdy Post Alert!

Guardians of the Galaxy is my very favorite Marvel movie. The characters, the writing, the music are all absolutely perfect, I laugh and cry every time I watch it.
Both of them.

I've wanted to do some form of a Guardians video for my YT channel for a very long time, and have had a few ideas down in a notebook somewhere since the first movie released.
Obviously, Rocket and Groot could be puppets, that's just a given.

I even built a raccoon puppet for a GOTG video that never happened, he ultimately became a character called Fernando that pops up from time to time in a lot of things I do...

I'd thought long and hard about who would play Star-Lord before realizing that I could do it myself because I could hide behind the one of the coolest movie helmets of all-time...
And so, the hunt was on for the costume parts and pieces!

Audrey bought me a beautiful coat and t-shirt from Hot Topic, and I ordered a helmet and walk-man from X-Coser (although, now that it's been so long Marvel Legends' new replica helmet will be replacing it).
The one thing I couldn't find were Star-Lord's double-barreled Blasters, and I had no idea how hard it would be to track them down...

First and foremost, I'd like to express my pure disgust and annoyance that all of the blasters I could find are sold separately, which is either genius or pure evil of the toy companies. Star-Lord has two blasters so every kid (or kid at heart) is going to need a pair to complete their ensemble...
Someone write to Disney on that one!

There were Nerf guns released with the first film, but Cosplayers snatched them up and they all disappeared rather quickly. The last time I checked they were going for around $75 each on eBay, and that's too crazy even for me...

The first pair of blasters I tracked down and ordered through Amazon were made by a company called Disguise. It wasn't noted in any of the listings online, but these are made to pair with a children's Halloween costume, so I had no clue how small they were until they were delivered. I painted over the safety orange anyway, since it was better than nothing...

These next blasters were released with the new batch of toys for Vol. 2, and were off-model but closer to the right size.
BUT they were $20 each, so I waited for them to hit the discount bin...

I waited (not so) patiently and eventually bought myself a pair for $10, but still wasn't too pumped about them. They sat in my to-do bin for a while... and are probably still there...

It's no secret how much I look forward to Halloween every year and will spend hours going through every rack in any store's seasonal department, and this year's crop of costumes and props was pretty lack-luster...

Then I found these:

I'm pretty sure I made some kind of embarrassing squealing noise, and probably startled some of the other shoppers, when I rounded the corner and saw these florescent beauties...
The price was right and they were the near-perfect size; last year's Stormtrooper Blasters and Batman Grappling Guns are nothing compared to this crazy/lucky find!
I didn't even stop my shopping cart from rolling to grab two.

A few coats of three different spray-paints and voila!

Sure, they still aren't perfect, but I'm very pleased with how this Scavenger Hunt finally wrapped up.

The video is still a work-in-progress, now to get started on Gamora...

More soon,
Avery

Monster Mash!

This MAMMOTH of a video has been a work in progress for well over two months now...

No lie, this song has been tumbling around in my head since I was 5 years old, and I'm shocked that no one has produced a puppet music video with it.

The biggest, and most time consuming factor of producing this video, was creating the nine new Monster characters. Starting in early September, I designed and built this gang of misfits, with their custom and specialty-made costumes assembled by the beautiful and talented Audrey Rushan (who is also my girlfriend, and who also-also performed the backup vocals to the video).

Since filming, all of the characters made their way to my eBay store and have shipped out to performers around the globe!

In total (building, filming, editing, etc.), we put  around 75 hours into this crazy thing.
Totally worth it.

I'm already planning for next year...

Avery

Mummy on eBay!

That's a Wrap!

2017 Goosebumps VLOG!

Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF!

Over the last few weeks I was lucky enough to reunite with an old friend...

Immediately after filming my Alien Abduction Talk Show sketch I received an email from some of the good people of Sony looking to see if I (well, Slappy) was interested in being part of an ad campaign with Trick or Treat for UNICEF.

Pretty simple stuff, record some voice-over that an editor will cut to pre-existing video I shot in LA with Slappy on green screen two years ago for Blu-Ray commercials and some other online content.

Of course I was in, I would NEVER turn down Slappy... too scared of what he'd do to me...
Plus, they had initially contacted Jack Black for the gig, and he sent them my way, so I definitely couldn't say no!

I got another call the following day and was told that they were having some trouble with the old footage. Being the pessimist I am, I assumed that meant they would find another option and this was a courtesy call to let me down easy...  But, rather than doing that, they asked if it would be easier to shoot something original WITH the puppet...

So... Slappy was shipped over-night from LA TO MY HOUSE!
Of course I kept his trunk locked at night... I've read the books...

I filmed my 3 ads and a handful of other things for UNICEF's website the next day in about 2 hours at a local television studio, and Google Drive-ed the raw footage to the offices in NYC.

Just under two weeks later I packed Slappy back into his case and shipped him back out to LA, and here we are... The whole thing is a bit of a blur, I'm still trying to convince myself it really happened... although, I am still trying to convince myself the movie happened, too...

As usual, I've got a Vlog about the whole thing on the way very soon, so keep an eye out!

Avery

PROJECT: Winnie the Pooh "Hunny" Pots

My childhood revolved around Winnie the Pooh. I had the toys, dolls, play-sets, and action figures, I watched ALL of the movies and TV shows (The Book of Pooh is still one of the best children's shows ever produced), and had TONS of the books (both the A. A. Milne originals and Disney's incarnations).

One of the things my childhood always wanted that wasn't actually a real thing (aside from a Mr. Spell from Toy Story) was one of Pooh's Hunny Pots to store my collection of Winnie the Pooh and Friends figures in.

And I had only the best kind of Pooh figures, the kinds that didn't move or talk, no points of articulation, just a figure that could take part in any imaginary scenario I could dream up. Though, I did mostly just re-create whatever episode of The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh I'd just watched...

My Great-Grandmother was some kind of Yard Sale Magician and, somehow, always found everything I wanted in somebody's front yard... Complete sets of Happy Meal toys, Beanie Babies (back when they were a hot commodity), and generally anything else I could have imagined...
BUT she could NOT find a Hunny Pot.

So, she had to make do with a plastic Ice Cream bucket with "HUNNY" written in puffy paint on one side.
And I LOVED it. I carried toys everywhere in that thing...

Fast forwarding now about 20 years, when I found this:

I stumbled on this $10 candy jar in Wal-Mart's party supply department, and knew INSTANTLY it would make the PERFECT Hunny Pot. I grabbed two of them, and some cans of spray paint, and the started painting the second I got back home.

A few coats of paint, some painters tape, and a Sharpie were all I needed to see that silly, insignificant childhood dream realized.

They sit on a shelf with the rest of my Disney prop collection, and every time I look at them I smile.
Sometimes it's the little things that make your heart the happiest.

VIDEO: Alien Abduction Talk Show!

I keep a running list of YouTube video ideas on a cork board in my puppet workshop. Typically I just add to it and never mark anything off, but I FINALLY found something to check off the list!

This one's been on the list for nearly 2 years and AT LAST it's free!

Sam and I both are striving to produce more comedy content, like last week's Brownstone Brothers, and this week it was my turn. As long as we've known each other we've NEVER made anything for my channel so I took full advantage of this opportunity!

I built the puppet, designed the graphics, filmed, edited, and uploaded this one in less than 48 hours!

I'm proud of me.

More next week, I'm sure!
Avery

PROJECT: Tangled Pascal Prop

A fun little build from earlier this week!
He's not a puppet, so I guess he'd qualify as a prop.. but an adorable prop!

My gal and I have been talking about Cosplaying Rapunzel and Flynn Rider for well over a year now, and this guy has been in my mind almost as long. I've learned the joys of building Disney characters as puppets in the last few months so this guy was a no-brainer (lucky for me)!

I built his head around a plastic frog skeleton from Target's Halloween department, and fee-handed the rest of his body. He came together pretty quickly, in just under an hour, and I couldn't be happier!
